Favorite Halloween Looks 2016

Happy Halloween everyone!

Even though it’s Monday, some of you might still be celebrating tonight or at least appreciate the intricate Halloween tutorials many YouTubers have been releasing these past few weeks.

While there have been a number of amazing looks, one beauty YouTuber in particular has been knocking it out of the park. Melissa Alatorre is a gorgeous make-up artist turned YouTube star that produces the most beautiful looks on a regular basis, but her Halloween tutorials especially have been more than perfect.

If you’re going all the way out this year, her Metallic Sugar Skull tutorial is pure genius (and includes an amazing flower crown DIY). Just check out this glowing golden goodness:

Just yesterday, she also released a less challenging but similarly intricate 3D Spider Eyes tutorial that is simply stunning as well:

So while I will probably be spending Halloween at my desk in my pajamas, Melissa sure has got you covered in case you are heading out. Stay safe and have lots of fun!

theBalm Meet Matt(e) Hughes Minis

You know the days when you browse your favorite beauty websites and come across a product you just have to have? This is exactly what happened when I spotted this cute little liquid lipstick set.

theBalm Meet Matt(e) Hughes Mini Set houses six colors from their collection, ranging from a variety of nudes to bolder shades.

Since I already own the full size of Committed, I gave that one away to my sister-in-law, but the other shades I tried out immediately.

Charming and Sincere are incredibly similar darkened rosy nudes, with Charming being a shade or two deeper than Sincere, making for a more dramatic, noticeable nude.

Doting is a soft coral nude that isn’t something I usually go for, but it actually looks great on the lips without making them look to concealer-like or washed out.

Dedicated is a beautiful berry that looks rich and not too bright – perfect for fall.

Finally, Loyal is a classic red that makes for a long-lasting bold lip without smearing or being too dry.

I am so happy I picked up this little set, because, in all honesty, I usually never use up my liquid lipsticks before they go bad or are not to my taste anymore. This way, I got to try out a beautiful selection from a brand I love without having to commit to a full size.

The formula is absolutely similar to the full sizes as well, down to the chocolate-mint scent that it still not my favorite but fades away reasonably soon. The little doe-foot makes them easy to apply and their lasting power is great. If you can get your hands on this set and are a lover of liquid lipsticks like me, make sure to pick it up!

Recently #22

I sure could need a piece of cake right now because the past few weeks really seem to have knocked the wind out of me. To say that it has been busy might be an understatement, but to be honest it has been a good busy.

Not only have I been granted a few new and and exciting opportunities regarding my research while trying to churn out a few decent pages for my current writing project, fall also seems to be the time of social obligations with tons of birthdays and events.

But while my calendar seems to be overflowing, I must say, I’m loving it. My body though – not so much. With the first cold of the season and a bad back that has been playing up like crazy, I’ve been trying to take it slow whenever I can and really, what’s better than curling up with a hot cup of coffee, something sweet, and a great book to delve into on a slow weekend? Finding the right balance now is key and I’m looking forward to try and enjoy both the busy and the quiet times these coming months.

Essie Maki Me Happy

I have to say, the Essie fall collection of limited shades is a great one this year. A variety of Japan-inspired polishes, there is a great range from pastel shades to bright pops of color.

Being the completely predictable beauty lover that I am, I of course picked up the classic red from the collection called Maki Me Happy.

A beautiful creamy shade, this red leans the tiniest bit purple and goes perfectly with this time of year. It isn’t too bright or punchy but subdued and classic.

I have been wearing it on my toes for the past two weeks and I almost wish it still was sandal weather as it looks so beautiful. There’s no doubt I will bust this out on my fingernails soon enough and carry it over into wintertime as well.

I know reds are a staple in every polish collection, but this is a color I wish was permanent, it is so classic and pretty. If you can get your hands on it, make sure to pick Maki Me Happy up. The quality and opacity is completely on par with the regular Essie line-up, so it is a pleasure to apply. With a quick-drying topcoat, this is a manicure (or pedicure) I can get done in minutes and happily wear for weeks on end.

Bookshelf #13: A Book Lovers’ Dream

Guys, I am excited for lots of literary newness!

Today, I am spending the day at the Frankfurt Book Fair, the biggest literature and publishing fair in the world. I am so ready to be inspired and introduced to lots of new works from authors all over the world.

I will let you know about anything that stood out to me and that I am excited to read in the next Bookshelf.

See you soon!

Mario Badescu Drying Lotion

With a stress-related eruption of epic proportions happening on my chin last week, it was time for me to turn to the Mario Badescu Drying Lotion to take care of my blemishes.

This product is a sulphur and salicylic acid based acne treatment that promises to dry out pimples over night, leaving you with clean skin the next morning.

It is heavy duty and named pretty aptly as it does dry out active blemishes immediately and speeds up the healing process a lot. However, it does also dry out the surrounding skin, so make sure to follow up with a light but hydrating skincare routine so as to not be left with flaky, dry patches.

Also, do NOT use this on broken skin. The delivery system transports the active ingredients through a layer of alcohol, so it stings like hell if you put it on an open blemish or scratch. For me however, this is great. Since I am a picker, this protective layer (and the fear of a burning sensation on my face) keeps me from scratching open my skin.

Using it could not be easier. You just dip a cotton bud into the sediment at the bottom, lifting it through the liquid and dotting it straight onto the face. Just be sure to not shake the product as it is meant to come in separate layers.

In combination with my dermalogica Clear Start lotion, this is a great system to keep my skin clear and pimple-free. Of course, it is not the most attractive to go to bed with light pink dots all over the face, but if my skin looks clearer in the morning, I am more than happy to do it.

Real Techniques Ultimate Base Set

I’m most definitely all set in the brush department but on a recent trip to the local drugstore, I stumbled over a set of brushes that I just could not pass up.

The Real Techniques Ultimate Base Set includes two of my favorite tools from their line and an exclusive brush, so I just could not say no.

In there is the Expert Face Brush, which I love to use for every type of base from tinted moisturizers to actual foundation. Since cleaning brushes is one of my least favorite tasks, it’s perfect that I now have a second one. It is also amazing for cream cheek products, so I will definitely find a use for it.

The Miracle Complexion Sponge is the second part of the set and I love have multiple of these as well since you can’t really have sponges sitting around dirty. I now have three on rotation and love using them for foundation (if I have a bit more time to work it in), concealer or powdering.

The set exclusive is the Deluxe Concealer Brush, which is similar in shape to the Zoeva 142 but much softer and more loose, so it works great for buffing in concealer under the eyes. You could also use this as an eyeshadow brush, especially for cream shades.

Finally, it comes with a little brush pouch that houses a decent sized mirror. It’s not the greatest quality and very much geared towards holding only a few brushes, but it’s a cute extra.

I think this set is a great addition to the RT line-up, so if you’re looking to expand your brush (and sponge) collection at a great price, make sure to pick this set up.
